Step 1: Choose a Leader/Point Person for Equal Employment Opportunity Efforts

To complete this step:

  • Identify someone to be the point person for overseeing your commitments to EEO. That person may actually perform all the necessary tasks or may instead coordinate or monitor the performance of those tasks by others.
  • Choose someone who has the capacity (in terms of both time availability and skills) to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. The role can likely be fulfilled by an individual who is already providing oversight for the program, such as the named apprenticeship coordinator. You may also designate more than one individual for this role.
  • Once you designate the individual(s), be sure that they understand their responsibilities. Provide them with the resources they need to accomplish the role. And communicate to everyone in the apprenticeship program that the individual(s) has the authority—and the backing of program leadership—to ensure that the program fulfills its EEO obligations.

Many youth apprenticeships have two organizations in close contact with the apprentice—the employer and a school or community-based organization. In these cases, we recommend that each of those organizations designate an EEO lead. While the sponsor’s lead will serve as the EEO lead responsible under the regulations, each lead should be responsible for EEO within their organization.

Many high schools have work-based learning coordinators, career coaches, career and technical education administrators, guidance administrators, or other administrators who could be well suited for this role, but each school should consider the responsibilities of the EEO lead to determine the best match for their school.

Your next step

At the end of each of the five steps, we will ask you to record your next step using prompts from the course expert. Why? So you can walk away from this course with tangible things you need to do next. You can either record your answers for step 1:
