Similar occupations

If you can't find the occupation on the list, the next step is to find a similar occupation with enough overlap in skills and competencies to qualify as the occupation that you would list to register your program. One good place to start is the job classification system O*NET Links to an external site., where you can search for your job title and see what other job titles are considered to be related occupations.

Continuing with the same example, using "Help Desk" as a search term resulted in the summary report with this list of occupations that contain "Help Desk." Here, you can see alternate occupations that could be selected to identify apprenticeable occupations. In this list, the computer user support specialist appeared to be most closely aligned with the IT occupation we are seeking.

Clicking on that occupation, you can get a summary report header for the computer user support specialist:

Note that there are other sample reported job titles that can also be associated with this occupation. These sample job titles can be additional options that you use to search the apprenticeable occupation list. Hopefully, this search process is enough for you to find an occupation on the apprenticeable occupation list that matches your needs. If so, this is the occupation you will use to register your apprenticeship program.

If you are still looking for a match, you can use O*Net’s RAPIDS Crosswalk Search tool Links to an external site.. Searching for limited terms, such as “IT,” will bring up a list of apprenticeable occupations that include “IT” in the occupation name. This search for “IT” resulted in five apprenticeable occupations that currently exist. Most relevant, the IT generalist is listed as an apprenticeable occupation, and the report indicates that it appears in O*NET as a computer user support specialist.

Again, if this search provides you with an apprenticeable occupation that aligns with an O*Net listing that fits your needs, then you should use the apprenticeable occupation when you register your program.

What if your occupation doesn’t exist in this search either? We’ll walk you through this scenario on the next page.
