What is this course about?

This self-paced, online training course walks you through how to identify occupations that are a good fit for youth apprenticeship. This course will offer five steps to consider when selecting occupations for your youth apprenticeship program. These five steps are designed to ensure that there is mutual benefit to the businesses and the youth apprentices.

STEP 1 - Identify an occupation through labor market trends and partnerships.

STEP 2 - Consider your portfolio balance.

STEP 3 - Research quantitative and qualitative factors for the occupation.

STEP 4 - Evaluate your data using a decision tree to determine whether the occupation fits your program, could fit, or doesn’t fit.

STEP 5 - Align your occupation with the DOL apprenticeable occupation list.

While this course is designed to offer some considerations and tools for selecting occupations for youth apprenticeship, it is not designed to be prescriptive. Ultimately, the context of your location and program matters, so you can and should modify these steps to ensure they meet your needs.
